Millville, CA—June 10, 2005
The first Millville Heritage Day put on by the Millville Historical Society began with a scrumptious pancake breakfast cooked by the Volunteer Fire Company.  Next came the parade (even longer than Whitmore’s!) led by a VFW color guard and the Millville Elementary School Marching Band. Grand Marshall was Elsie Robinson with her grandson Kyle, who rode in the Millville Fire Protection District’s giant yellow fire engine. Our favorites here were the Hawes’ Ranch “Cow Train†filled with students from Millville School and the young dancers from the Armstrong School of Dance in Palo Cedro.Â
The parade was announced with aplomb by Bud Farrell, and judged by Millville School’s Principal Mindy De Santis, Millville Fire Protection District board member Steve Goedert, and Shasta County Supervisor Glenn Hawes. The winners were: Millville School Marching Band (Marching Group); Chandra and Danielle Parker on their matched paint horses Smokinic and Boone (Mounted Group); Cierra Barry driving her Clydesdale Sweetie Pie (Mounted Junior); Redding Rodeo Queen Melissa Chatham (Mounted Senior); the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. Cuttlefish Base (Float); Marty and Leanne Dickson’s car filled with students from Millville School (Motorized Specialty); the Norcal Antique Tractor Club (Motorized Tractor).
After the parade, visitors toured the Historical Society’s museum to view the computer slide show of early photographs, then walked or drove the short distance to the school where vendors waited at their booths with a wide variety of wares, and the San Francisco Deli had set up its barbecue. As the afternoon wore on, guests bought raffle tickets, enjoyed the dancing exhibition put on by the Armstrong School of Dance, watched children search for coins in the playground money pit, or just visited with their friends and neighbors. The event ended with the giant raffle drawing at 3:00 p.m.
